Puerto Rico Wedding Policies


Puerto Rico Marriage Law Requirements:

License Stamps:

You will need to obtain two stamps at the Internal Revenue Office (Colecturía)

  • Cost is $25.00 for the first stamp, and $5.00 for the second stamp.

ID Requirements:

  • Drivers license for US citizens or passport for non US
  • A valid Driver’s License is good indefinitely.
  • The license can only be used within the U.S. / Puerto Rico.

Residency Requirement:

Applicants do not have to be residents of Puerto Rico. However, if either party is a citizen or resident of a country other than the U.S, a declaration certifying that he or she is not married must be sworn before a Notary Public or other person authorized to administer paths in that country. This declaration must accompany the application.

Application Requirements:

  • Both the bride and groom must appear in person at the time of application request.
  • Persons under 18 (16-17) years of age must have the consent of their parents or legal guardians to marry.
  • Blood tests are required.

If Divorced:

  • If previously married, you need a certified copy of divorce or death decree with a raised seal prior to a marriage license being granted.

Blood Tests:

  • For U.S. citizens, blood tests are required, although a test conducted on the U.S. mainland within 10 days of the ceremony will suffice. A doctor in Puerto Rico must sign the license after conducting an examination of the bride and groom. For complete details: 787. 767. 9120. The cost for the lab test here in Puerto Rico ranges between $15.00 – $25.00.
  • All documents must be authenticated at the Marriage License Bureau.

Waiting Period:

  • The amount of time needed to complete the license requirements.

Customs:

  • U.S. citizens do not need to clear Puerto Rican Customs upon arrival by plane or ship from the mainland. All non-U.S. citizens must clear Customs and are permitted to bring in items intended for their personal use, including tobacco, cameras, film, and a limited supply of liquor (usually 40 oz.).

Remarks:

  • Central office has records since July 22, 1931. Copies of earlier records may be obtained by writing to Local Registrar (Registrador Demográfico) in municipality where event occurred or by writing to central office for information.
  • Money order should be made payable to Secretary of the Treasury. Personal checks are not accepted. To verify current fees, the telephone number is 787.728.7980.
  • All applications must be accompanied by a photocopy of an identification card with picture. Example: Driver’s license or Passport (not expired).
